Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

Holding Hands

The World Health Organization calls suicide a significant public health problem. It is a global concern. Annually, over 1 million people die by suicide around the world and many more attempt suicide.

Living Works (ASIST) is the world’s leading suicide intervention training. It is an empowering program that promotes a whole community response to suicide prevention. Preventing suicide also involves preserving and promoting life.

ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may be at risk of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants do not need any formal training to attend the workshop. ASIST can be learned and used by anyone. ASIST provides standardized learning with a detailed manual, video debriefs, and group discussions.

The goal of the workshop is to enhance a caregiver’s abilities to assist a person with thoughts of suicide to keep safe for now.  By completing the workshop, participants will learn how to:

  1. Discuss suicide with a person at risk in a direct and empathetic manner.

  2. Recognize that caregivers and persons at risk are affected by personal and societal attitudes about suicide

  3. Understand the needs of a person with thoughts of suicide.

  4. Provide life assisting guidance to persons with thoughts of suicide in a flexible manner

  5. Use listening skills effectively to identify life preserving information within an intervention.

  6. Identify what is necessary for a safety plan when working with a person with thoughts of suicide

  7. Demonstrate the skills required to provide suicide first aid to a person with thoughts of suicide.

  8. Aid participants in feeling more ready, willing, and able to assist a person with thoughts of suicide.

  9. Recognize that suicide prevention is broader than suicide intervention and includes life promotion and self care for persons with thoughts of suicide and caregivers.

  10. Appreciate the value of improving community resources including the way that they work together

Two instructors certified by LivingWorks will facilitate the training. Both instructors are trained to provide assistance and support if any participants are struggling with the subject of suicide during the training.
